Yogyakarta
The city of Yogyakarta (also called Yogya, Jogja,
or Djogdja) is a center of Javanese culture. The city came into
being in 1755, after the Mataram Kingdom division into the Sultanates
of Yogyakarta and Surakarta (Solo). In Yogyakarta, we can enjoy
Gamelan (Javanese traditional music instrument), classical and contemporary
Javanese dances, and wayang kulit (leather shadow puppet). Local
craftsmen in Yogyakarta excel in arts such batiks, silver and leather
works.
Yogyakarta is also a very lively city and a shopper's delight. The
main road, Malioboro Street, is always crowded and famous for its
night street food-culture and street vendors. Many tourist shops
and cheap hotels are concentrated along this street. The key attraction
of Yogyakarta is Keraton or Sultan's Palace. As the city of students,
there are many universities here. In Yogyakarta, we can enjoy riding
Becak, traditional rickshaw-style transport.
