Indonesia
Indonesia is often referred as a string of emeralds
in the equator. It is the world's largest archipelago, a name which
aptly represents its 17,000 islands which span more than 5000 km
(3,200 miles) from Sabang in northern Sumatra to Merauke in Papua.
Indonesia has population of more than 220 million, scatterd over
a land area of some 2 millions square kilometers. Lying across a
region of immense volcanic activity, Indonesia has some 400 volcanoes,
with at least 70 still active.
There are five major islands in this enormous chain. The largest
landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java,
Borneo (Kalimantan), Celebes (Sulawesi) and Papua. The smaller islands
fall into two main groups, the Molluccas to the northeast and the
lesser Sunda chain east of Bali.
This wonderful archipelago offer everything: sandy beaches, dense
jungles, fantastic volcanoes, great gorges, various kinds of flora
and fauna. Indonesia also very rich in culture, culinary, dances,
festivals, etc. It's very worthy to explore this astonishing archipelago!
