Pura Besakih

Besakih Temple, called as Mother Temple, is huge complex of majestic shrines in Bali. The temple that perched on the slopes of a volcanic mountain, Mount Agung, is esteemed as the supreme of all the shrines and temples of the island. Spreading over a sprawling area divided in several courtyards and shrines, the temple is the largest of its kind in the country. Besakih Temple, with 35 shrines and halls, has been a center of Hindu believes and customs from ancient times.

Once known as Naga Besukian, the residence of dragon-god, Besakih Temple earned the fame of being State Temple at the beginning of 11th Century. Showing the generosity to welcome every devotee irrespective of class and caste, Pura Besakih Temple in Bali attracts thousands of visitors every year. Three Padmasanas or shrines devoted to the Trinity of Hinduism are the main attractions of the temple. The white one is dedicated to Shiva, the red one is for Brahma whether the black one is for Vishnu.
